LIKE IT WAS YESTERDAY
Summer 2021 | Director, Writer & Sole Animator
Exploring the concept of the childhood memory, Like It Was Yesterday takes the audience on a light-hearted journey through the surreal and the subconscious. Featuring the vocal talents of Katriel Rose and Jomi Yap ( two of my closest friends from childhood! ) a script born of real memories coalesced is brought to life through a bright, illustrative animated film.
This was my last project as a student at Anglia Ruskin University. The culmination of everything I've learned and loved. This is a love story to the past that built my present.
It started with the idea of creating a collage-based animation. I enjoyed the process of using magazine cut-outs in Diaspora so much that I wanted to replicate the process in my final year film, while still using hand-drawn 2D animation to showcase my illustration skills.
I did my research on childhood memory in all of its precariousness. The Lost in the Mall experiment was the key piece that helped me connect the dots between all of the scientific research on what a memory is and the film that would result.
The film presents the innocuous memory of skipping school in an unorthodox, surrealist way. It's a cacophony of late 2000's references from my own childhood, including Pokemon, LEGO sets, and those boxy home television sets with the thick glass screens.
The otherworldly characters are the protagonist Claire's manifestation of how impish and — well, monstrous she and her friends were when they were kids. Who doesn't cringe a bit thinking about all the things they got up to when they were 7?
The script was built off of interviews that I'd conducted as part of my research. I asked various friends to recall a childhood memory for me, interjecting where I could to ask questions. I wanted the script to feel as natural as possible, so all of these interviews were cross-pollinated into the final story.
Truth be told, the original audio recording was over 5 minutes long. I had to cut this drastically due to time constraints and general quarantine quandaries. Listen here:
